The Laskett, Much Birch
This famous garden, is the creation of Sir Roy Strong and his late wife, Julia Trevelyan. Over the last 25 years, they fashioned one of the most important formal gardens of the late 20th century together. It has a highly structured and architectural design. Topiary and hedging are used throughout to link the individual enclosed areas each with its own story to tell. It is perfumed with roses and there are vistas and alleys giving a feeling of grandeur. This is a truly personal garden, greatly influenced by their marriage together. Statuary and ornaments are used everywhere – each commemorating some event in the lives of these two highly artistic people. In recent years, Sir Roy has made enormous changes to the garden, opening it up and developing new areas. If you haven’t been recently, it is a must to see it again.
Grendon Court, Upton Bishop
Kate Edwards has created the garden from scratch since 2004 with the help of garden designer, Tom Stuart Smith. Kate is an enthusiastic gardener and wanted to create a contemporary garden, taking in the views of the surrounding countryside. The garden is on two levels, with many grasses and perennials on the lower level surrounding the lawn in front of the house. On the upper level, there is the dramatic use of more than 2,000 miscanthus grasses acting as a screen round the swimming pool, together with massed planting of many different types of grasses giving a fantastic overall colour effect. This garden is really something a bit different and a huge success.
