JENNY RAWORTH GARDEN DAYS 2012
Special visits for small groups to private gardens

DAY 3

BERKSHIRE GARDENS, NEAR NEWBURY
FRIDAY, 15TH JUNE 2012

Mariners, Bradfield
Anthony and Fenja Anderson
This lovely garden is a lesson in how to deal with a sloping garden site. The house sits at the lowest point with a broad terrace and two borders going up the lawn each planted in different colour schemes.  Unusual trees are planted on the upper lawn linking the different areas and taking the eye upwards. Beyond is the 1 acre wildflower meadow with mown paths which promises to be in full flower when we visit.  The special part of the garden is the sunken rose garden, a glorious sight in June and full of roses as well as herbaceous perennials. I loved the raised pool in the centre of this garden with its romantic entwined heron sculpture and the moon gate festooned with roses and clematis. Fenja is always adding new plantings to this wonderfully maintained garden which is such an inspiration.

Pyt House, Ashampstead
Hans and Virginia von Celsing
Virginia is a garden designer and this garden, developed over the last 5 years, is constantly being added to with new areas.  The house is surrounded by different formal areas of pleached limes and hedging of hornbeam and yew enclosing lush plantings within. There is a wide terrace in front of the house and small gravel garden, a formal pond and fountain. The vegetable garden and orchard is very attractive and colourful with fruit tree tunnels under planted with blue nepeta. There is a large pond with its boggy areas already looking very mature. I thought Virginia had some great planting and design ideas to give lots of inspiration to anyone starting out with a new garden.
Virginia has very kindly agreed to give us lunch in her home.
