JENNY RAWORTH GARDEN DAYS 2010
Special visits for small groups to private gardens

DAY 3
SUSSEX/HAMPSHIRE GARDENS
Wednesday 9th June 2010

TROTTON OLD RECTORY, TROTTON
This is the home of Caroline Pilley and certainly one of my favourites, particularly because of her collection of wonderful roses, at their best at this time of the year.  The terrace at the back of the house leads onto the rose garden with the croquet lawn beyond surrounded by a lime walk. Paths and walkways link the different areas, all of distinct character. There is a circular rosarium with huge shrub roses surrounded by beds of delphiniums, lavenders and campanulas giving wonderful colour. To the east of the house, at a lower level, is the water garden with lush bog planting with blue iris and foliage plants.  There is a very prolific vegetable garden with a charming Victorian greenhouse and hens!

Lunch at Keeper’s Arms, Trotton

SANDHILL FARMHOUSE, ROGATE
Rosemary Alexander is a well-known gardening author and Principal of the English Gardening School. Her own garden is therefore a lesson in design and planting.  The front garden is cleverly divided with a small woodland area filled with unusual shrubs and trees and there is also a white garden. Rosemary successfully grows many interesting and different plants and will give lots of gardening tips and information. There is a hot dry terrace outside the front door where the cottage is covered with excellent climbing plants.  The rear garden has mirror borders and a red garden, a small gazebo and a small decorative vegetable garden, overlooking the surrounding countryside

KIMPTON HOUSE, LOWER DURFORD WOOD
Susan Napier is a garden designer and has created this large country garden over the last 20 years.  One of the most outstanding features is the long panoramic vista from the house with a winding path edged with wild flowers, which disappears into the meadow beyond. You have to follow the path and see the butterflies! There are big herbaceous borders and topiary in a formal setting contrasting with an amazing tropical garden round the swimming pool, with its own micro climate and huge exotic plants.  There is also a secret garden made from the old tennis court with gravel and pleached limes with squares of box at their feet. Don’t miss the big herb garden and a spiral ellipse lawn.  Tea will be served here.
