DAY 1
OXFORDSHIRE GARDENS
Tuesday, 11th MAY 2010
Dean Manor, Chadlington
Lord and Lady Chadlington are the owners of this quintessential English country garden originally designed by Arabella Lennox Boyd. The garden has wonderful yew hedges, statuary and herbaceous borders to die for! There is a romantic white garden with rose-covered arches and a delightful rill garden with complex channels. There are many water features, ponds and waterfalls - including two linked swimming pools with a yew tunnel between looking down towards the kitchen window where Lady Chadlington told me she could see the children leaping off the diving board! This garden is an interesting mix of well-established borders and ongoing projects.
Lunch at The Bell, Charlbury.
Gothic House, Charlbury
This garden, designed and created by two artists, is a work of art itself. Andrew Lawson is one of Britain’s leading garden photographers and his wife, Briony, is a sculptress. Their artistic flair is evident everywhere in their compact walled garden. This is not a large garden but it is cleverly divided to give the illusion of length and space. The planting is very imaginative and colour association is of great importance. A new area of planted squares replaces the lawn. Some of Briony’s sculptures are displayed in the garden and there are areas of false perspective to deceive the eye. There is a pleached lime walk and a lovely Gothic conservatory. Andrew will show us round and give us a cup of tea.
The Priory, Charlbury
This garden is owned by Dr.Kabir and other colleagues who are all enthusiastic gardeners. The formal terraced topiary garden near the house has been restored and they have created a restful atmosphere with parterres, terraces, statutory and water features. There is a formal potager and an arboretum containing over 200 different trees and sculpture. This garden has a wonderful atmosphere with huge old fashioned roses and big shrubs creating secret areas to explore.
